Keep the equation balanced

Do the same operation to both sides of an equation.

Example equation

x+5=12

Undo +5 by subtracting 5 from both sides.

Example

Solve x + 5 = 12

Subtract 5 from both sides.

x+5=12\Rightarrow x=7

Do not change only one side

An equation stops being equivalent if you change only one side.
